The Norwegian artist Sol Kjøk will exhibit one of her works in Makati's Yuchengco Museum from November 16 - January 29.
The painting will be part of the exhibition Nothing to Declare - an international art project that explores discussions on migration of people across borders. It will feature around 50 artists from 18 countries, and be held in the Blanc Compound, Yuchengco Museum and Vargas Museum from October 2011 - January 2012.
-The exhibition will create a visual sense of the theme migration, and show the artists interpretation of an age where there are few or no borders. The name Nothing to Declare refers to the many marginalized people who pass through immigration services each year with no money or valuables to declare, explains exhibition organizer Ms Precious Leano.
The Philippines has a large population of overseas workers, and the exhibition focuses on challenges these and other migrants meet.
-As individuals these people often have little, but together as a group they make the Philippine economy afloat. However, migration is not only a Philippine but a worldwide phenomenon, and that is why we have made this an international exhibit, says Ms Leano.
About the artist
Sol Kjøk is an internationally exhibited and collected artist. Born in Norway, Sol left her tiny mountain village at 16 years of age, and has since then lived and learned in Paris, Vienna, Medellín and a number of U.S. cities. Virtually self-taught in artistic techniques, she finally obtained an MFA from Parsons, NYC, in 1998, and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
While Sol’s intricate line drawings of human figures echo the works of great masters of the past, they are born from a diverse contemporary process. Her swirling constellations, which arise from actual physical performances, combine mystery and drama with conceptual.
