Residence Permit to Look for a Job (Skilled Workers)

Skilled workers/specialists are persons who have specialist training in a particular field (e.g. engineers, nurses, doctors, etc) or have special qualifications needed in Norway. These applicants may apply for a Temporary Residence Permit (six months) in order to enter Norway and look for a job.

Important information:

  1. To be granted a Residence Permit to Work, applicants must have obtained a job that corresponds to their education, e.g. nursing or engineering. It is not possible to get a Residence Permit to Work as an unskilled worker such as a 'Barista', Waiter, Cleaner, etc.

  2. In some trades (like nursing) proficiency in Norwegian is a requirement. It is up to the Employer to assess whether the applicant's proficiency in Norwegian is sufficient or not.

  3. Having obtained a SAFH lisence does NOT mean one is guaranteed a job in Norway. A SAFH lisence simply authorises a person to work in Norway within a certain industry (providing a Residence Permit to Work has been approved).
