The Norwegian Embassy Participates in Inauguration of UC-NSA Building

On 13 August 2008, the Royal Norwegian Embassy participated in the opening of the new UC-NSA building at University of Cebu Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue Campus. Among the guests were Secretary of Trade and Industry, Hon. Peter B. Favila, Ms. Elisabeth Grieg, the president of the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association, and Norway’s Chargé d’Affaires to the Philippines Ms. Siri Maria Midré.

University of Cebu is one of the foremost maritime schools in the Philippines, and was chosen by the Norwegian Shipowner’s Association (NSA) as a partner institution for the NSA Philippines Cadet Project. The president of the NSA, Ms. Elisabeth Grieg, was present during the inauguration of the new schoolbuilding, which can accommodate 300 NSA sponsored cadets. These cadets are educated and trained to become future officers in the Norwegian Merchant Fleet.

Secretary of Trade and Industry, Hon. Peter B. Favila, was the guest of honor on behalf of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. The Embassy’s First Secretary, Ms. Siri Maria Midré, delivered a speech where she spoke of the close relationship between Norway and the Philippines, with special emphasis on the countries’ maritime industries and the great number of Filipino seafarers serving on board Norwegian vessels.

Norway’s particular strength in maritime education, research, and development, as for instance seen through the NSA Cadet Project, is expected to positively contribute to the further development of the Philippine maritime education and training.

The event was very well attended with representatives from Norwegian shipping companies and Filipino manning agencies. Following the formal opening of the new UC-NSA building, the guests were toured around the campus and witnessed cultural performances by the students.
